Films you might have missed: Beautiful Creatures

This is my inaugural foray into the Netflix depths for movies that I (and possibly you too) have overlooked over the years. This one is a 2000 film titled Beautiful Creatures.

A dark comedy from director Bill Eagles, Beautiful Creatures stars Rachel Weisz (Petula) and Susan Lynch (Dorothy) as two strangers that share a problem -- violently abusive boyfriends. Dorothy saves Petula from almost certain death, but now the latter's boyfriend is dead. Soon, a half-baked kidnapping for ransom scheme is hatched. But a crooked detective, a sadistic and greedy boss, the other boyfriend, and Dorothy's loyal (and acrylic-painted) dog all get in the way. A dark comedy one might be compelled to call the British Thelma & Louise. It's pretty good in parts, but unfortunately falls flat in others. Still, I feel it's worth a watch. It is currently available on Netflix Instant.
